Alfred Wolmark (1877-1961)

 

Painter and designer of pottery and stained glass; one of the pioneers of Post-Impressionism in England.

 

Born 28 December 1877 in Warsaw and came to England with his parents 1883.

 

Studied at the R.A. Schools from 1895. Exhibited at the R.A. 1901–36; A.A.A. 1908–16; International Society 1911–25. First one-man exhibition at the Bruton Galleries 1905, followed by others in Berlin, Paris and New York.

 

His early work was of scenes of Jewish life in East London. Executed stage designs, of which an exhibition was held at the Incorporated Stage Society 1915. Retrospective exhibitions at the Leicester Galleries 1947, the Ben Uri Gallery 1948 and 1952, and the Woodstock Gallery 1959. Died 6 January 1961 in London. Memorial exhibition at the Ben Uri Gallery 1961.
